Japanese at a Cafe: Ordering, Sizes, and Staying

What you hear as you walk in

The first three or four lines of a cafe visit are things you hear, not things you say. Staff call out a welcome as the door opens, then either invite you forward or ask you to wait behind the line on the floor. None of these need an answer beyond a nod, but recognising them stops you freezing at the moment the counter opens up.

The staff questions and the answer each one wants

Every one of these can be answered with a fragment. Japanese counter speech drops the verb constantly, so aisu de and ten'nai de are complete, polite answers, not lazy ones. The particle de at the end is doing the work of a whole sentence: with iced, as eating in. If you want to sound a little softer, add onegai shimasu after the fragment and you are done.

The questions come fast and often overlap, so listen for the one content word rather than the whole sentence. Saizu means the size question is coming. Hotto or aisu means the temperature question. Ten'nai or mochikaeri means the eat-in question. Once you catch that word, the answer is already decided.

Ordering the drink in one sentence

The efficient order names the item, the temperature, the size, and the number in that order, then closes with onegai shimasu. Doing it in one sentence means staff do not have to ask you the follow-up questions at all, which is the fastest way through a queue. If you would rather answer question by question, that is perfectly normal too, and it gives you more chances to speak.

Kudasai and onegai shimasu are both fine here. Onegai shimasu sounds slightly softer and is what you will hear most from adult customers. Counting drinks uses the general counter: hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu. Size, hot and iced

Chains use their own size names and small shops often use only two sizes, so the safest move is to point at the menu and say the word printed on it. If you say Mサイズ and the shop uses different names, staff will simply repeat their own word back to you as a check, and hai is a complete reply. Saying ichiban chiisai no de, the smallest one, works everywhere and never needs a name.

Temperature is asked separately because a lot of drinks come both ways. Hotto and aisu are the words you need, and both attach to the drink with no in front of it. Ice level and cup lids are small requests that staff hear constantly, so they are safe to make even as a beginner.

Eat in or take away, and why it matters

This is the question learners miss most often, partly because it is asked in honorific Japanese that sounds nothing like textbook grammar. Omeshiagari is the polite form of eating, and omochikaeri is the polite form of taking something home. Staff may ask it either way round, or fold both into one sentence, so listen for the two content words rather than the sentence shape.

Your answer matters practically. It decides whether the drink arrives in a mug on a tray or a paper cup with a lid, and consumption tax on food and drink can differ between the two, so the total on screen may not match the shelf price you expected. Tax treatment varies and changes over time, so do not assume a fixed rule; just answer honestly and check the screen. If you say you are taking it away and then decide to sit, tell staff before you pay rather than after.

Milk, syrup and something to eat

Plant milks are common in city chains and rare in small shops, and whether they cost extra varies, so tsuika ryōkin wa kakarimasu ka is a useful line to keep. For pastries and sandwiches, the heating question comes as atatamemasu ka, and sono mama de daijōbu desu is the standard way to decline it without sounding blunt.

Daijōbu desu is worth a note of its own. At a counter it usually means no thank you, not it is fine to proceed, so if you say it when staff offer a bag or a straw, expect not to get one. If you do want the thing, say onegai shimasu instead.

Ordering for two people

Ordering for a second person adds two things: joining the items with to, and telling staff whether you are paying together or separately. Say the drinks in one breath with to between them, then answer the payment question. Betsubetsu, separately, is understood everywhere, though some busy counters will ask you to order one at a time instead, which is a practical request rather than a refusal.

Paying, waiting, and the pick-up call

Cash goes on the small tray on the counter rather than into the staff member's hand, and change is usually handed back with two hands or placed on the tray in turn. This is a habit, not a rule you will be scolded for breaking, but copying it makes the exchange feel normal.

The pick-up call names your drink, not your name, in most chain cafes. That means you are listening for hotto no kafe rate or aisu kōhī rather than anything personal, which is why it is worth saying your own order aloud once while you wait so the words are fresh when they are called.

Finding a seat and staying a while

Seating is usually free choice in chain cafes, and being shown to a table is more common in sit-down coffee shops. If the room is busy, the honest question is whether a particular seat is taken, and koko, aite imasu ka does that in three words. Leaving a bag or a phone on a table to hold it is a common local habit, but it is still a risk, and visitors are better off keeping valuables with them.

How long you can sit varies enormously. Big chains with power sockets and study tables expect people to stay, while small owner-run shops, station kiosks and places with a queue at the door do not. There is no fixed rule and it changes with the hour, so read the room: if people are standing with trays looking for space, that is your signal to finish or order again.

Water, refills and leaving

Self-service cafes expect you to carry your tray to the return counter and separate the cup, lid and rubbish into the marked bins. Table service shops do not, and clearing your own table there can get in the way. If you cannot tell which kind of place you are in, look at what the customers before you did.
