JLPT N4 Grammar Guide: Te-Form, Plans, Reasons, and Polite Requests

At N4, learners stop speaking in isolated beginner sentences and begin connecting ideas. This guide covers high-frequency N4 structures, explains how to use them, gives practical examples, and points to similar grammar at other JLPT levels so the differences are easier to remember.

Connect sentences with から, ので, たり, ながら, and てから

Talk about plans, experience, ability, permission, and obligation

Make requests sound more natural with てくれますか and てもらえますか

Compare N4 patterns with related N5, N3, N2, and N1 forms

What N4 grammar adds

N4 grammar is less about brand-new sentence types and more about control. You already know how to say I study Japanese. N4 lets you say you study after work, because you want to pass N3, while listening to music, and that you have studied in Japan before.

The most important shift is connection. If N5 is a set of clear blocks, N4 is the mortar between them.

Similar meanings to watch

  • から and ので both give reasons, but から can sound more direct while ので often sounds softer or more objective.
  • つもり and 予定 both talk about the future, but つもり is intention and 予定 is a schedule.
  • なければならない and なくてはいけない both mean must, but なくてはいけない is very common in conversation.
  • たり lists examples, not a complete list. Use と for complete noun lists at N5.

How N4 prepares you for N3

N3 grammar expects you to understand viewpoint and nuance. The difference between から and ので becomes the foundation for ために, おかげで, せいで, and ことから. The obligation pattern なければならない prepares you for べきだ, はずだ, and ざるを得ない.

When studying N4, always ask what job the pattern is doing. If you know the job, the N3 version will feel like a sharper tool rather than a new maze.

Key points

A practical way to improve

Write a short diary entry using から, てから, たり, and つもり. Then turn it into spoken Japanese. N4 grammar grows fastest when learners explain real routines and plans instead of translating textbook sentences.

  1. 1

    Choose one clear goal

Focus each session on a situation or skill you can actually use.

  2. 2

    Practice actively

Say complete answers aloud instead of only reading or recognizing Japanese.

  3. 3

    Review and repeat

Keep useful corrections and revisit the same skill until it feels natural.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What makes N4 grammar harder than N5?

N4 adds sentence connection and nuance. Instead of only saying what happened, you explain why it happened, what you plan to do, what you have experienced, and what someone is allowed or required to do.

Is ので more polite than から?

ので often sounds softer and more objective than から, especially in polite speech. から is direct and very common in conversation. Both can mean because, but the tone is different.

What is the difference between つもり and 予定?

つもり expresses a personal intention. 予定 refers to a scheduled plan or arrangement. 明日勉強するつもりです means I intend to study tomorrow; 明日は会議の予定です means I have a meeting scheduled tomorrow.

How should I review N4 grammar?

Group grammar by function: reasons, plans, requests, experience, ability, obligation, and comparison. Learners remember patterns better when they know the communicative job each pattern performs.
