The core meaning
計画に沿って進めます says the work will proceed in line with the plan. The underlying image is moving along a line, so the expression also works literally with a river, road or coastline. In abstract use, it tells the reader that the action broadly follows a proposal, guideline, theme or intention. It need not imply strict obedience to every rule.

| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 川に沿って駅まで歩きました。 | Kawa ni sotte eki made arukimashita. | I walked along the river to the station. |
| 計画に沿って作業を進めます。 | Keikaku ni sotte sagyō o susumemasu. | We will proceed according to the plan. |
How to form it
Attach に沿って to a noun that can serve as a line or guide: 川に沿って, 計画に沿って, 方針に沿って. に沿い is a more compact written form. Before a noun, use に沿った, as in 方針に沿った説明. The reading is そって, from the verb 沿う.
| Use | Japanese form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Physical route | 川に沿って歩く | Walk along the river |
| Plan | 計画に沿って進める | Proceed in line with the plan |
| Before noun | 方針に沿った説明 | An explanation aligned with policy |
Natural examples
Read each sentence for the relationship between the first idea and the second. The English translation gives a natural meaning, while the Japanese wording shows exactly where the pattern attaches.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ご希望に沿って日程を調整します。 | Gokibō ni sotte nittei o chōsei shimasu. | We will adjust the schedule to your wishes. |
| 方針に沿った説明をお願いします。 | Hōshin ni sotta setsumei o onegai shimasu. | Please give an explanation consistent with the policy. |
Compare the nearby pattern
説明書に従って組み立てる emphasizes obeying instructions. 計画に沿って話を進める emphasizes keeping the discussion aligned with its planned path. A guideline can be both a path and a rule, but the listener hears a different emphasis depending on the expression.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 説明書に従って組み立てた。 | Setsumeisho ni shitagatte kumitateta. | I assembled it by following the instructions. |
| 計画に沿って話を進めた。 | Keikaku ni sotte hanashi o susumeta. | I kept the discussion in line with the plan. |
The two examples may describe similar situations, but they lead the listener to different conclusions. Choose the form that matches the claim you really intend to make.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not treat に沿って as a general marker for 'near'. 川に沿って歩いた means the route ran along the river. If you merely stood at one point near it, 川のそばにいた is more accurate.
- Follows a physical or abstract line
- Noun + に沿って
- に沿った modifies a noun
- に従って stresses obedience
Try it yourself
Give one direction through a city and one instruction for a project. Use に沿って in both. Then decide whether に従って would make one sentence sound more rule-bound.
Say your sentence once slowly while looking at the Japanese pattern. Then say it again without reading. If your second clause changes from a possibility to a fact, or from advice to a requirement, revise it so the grammar still matches your meaning.
