The core meaning
人数に応じて席を用意します means the number of seats will be adjusted to the number of people. The condition is an input, and the response is chosen to suit it. This makes に応じて useful for customer service, teaching, pricing and planning. It can describe an organized policy or a flexible response, not merely two facts that happen to differ.

| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 人数に応じて席を用意します。 | Ninzū ni ōjite seki o yōi shimasu. | We will prepare seats according to the number of people. |
| 必要に応じて、休憩を取ってください。 | Hitsuyō ni ōjite, kyūkei o totte kudasai. | Please take breaks as needed. |
How to form it
Put a noun naming a need, quantity, result or situation before に応じて: 必要に応じて, 人数に応じて, 結果に応じて. The written form に応じ is also common. Before a noun, use に応じた, as in 年齢に応じた教材. A full verb clause does not directly attach; recast it as a noun or use a different conditional form.
| Use | Japanese form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Action | 人数に応じて席を増やす | Add seats according to the number |
| Before noun | 年齢に応じた教材 | Materials suited to age |
| Common phrase | 必要に応じて | As needed |
Natural examples
Read each sentence for the relationship between the first idea and the second. The English translation gives a natural meaning, while the Japanese wording shows exactly where the pattern attaches.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 年齢に応じた教材を選びます。 | Nenrei ni ōjita kyōzai o erabimasu. | We choose teaching materials suited to the learner's age. |
| 結果に応じて、次の練習を変えましょう。 | Kekka ni ōjite, tsugi no renshū o kaemashō. | Let's adjust the next exercise based on the results. |
Compare the nearby pattern
人によって答えが違う says answers differ from person to person. 一人ひとりの理解度に応じて説明を変える says the teacher deliberately adjusts the explanation to each learner's understanding. に合わせて is a close everyday alternative when matching something concrete, such as a schedule or pace.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 人によって答えが違います。 | Hito ni yotte kotae ga chigaimasu. | Answers vary from person to person. |
| 理解度に応じて説明を変えます。 | Rikaido ni ōjite setsumei o kaemasu. | I adjust the explanation to the learner's understanding. |
The two examples may describe similar situations, but they lead the listener to different conclusions. Choose the form that matches the claim you really intend to make.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not say 天気に応じて雨が降る if you merely mean that rain varies with the weather. Rain is not adapting its behavior to a need. Use によって or another causal expression for simple variation.
- The response fits a condition
- Use a noun + に応じて
- に応じた modifies a noun
- によって can state mere variation
Try it yourself
Imagine planning a class with beginners and advanced learners. Write what you would change according to their level using に応じて. Then use によって to report one difference that you did not control.
Say your sentence once slowly while looking at the Japanese pattern. Then say it again without reading. If your second clause changes from a possibility to a fact, or from advice to a requirement, revise it so the grammar still matches your meaning.
