What N2 grammar feels like
N2 grammar asks you to read Japanese that explains, argues, reports, and evaluates. The patterns are not only longer versions of N3. Many of them belong to formal writing, public information, and professional speech.
This is also the level where similar-meaning grammar becomes essential. If every structure is translated as because, although, or depending on, you lose the real difference.

How N2 leads into N1
N1 grammar often sharpens the same relationships N2 already teaches. にあたって becomes the more formal に際して. わけではない connects to partial negation and double-negative patterns like ないものでもない. ざるを得ない leads to stronger inevitability patterns.
Do not study N2 as a list of rare expressions. Study it as formal control over meanings you already know: cause, contrast, condition, scope, limitation, and inevitability.
