Know what the card is asking you to retrieve
A card may invite a meaning, a reading, or another specific response. Make that target clear before judging your answer. Recognizing the picture while being unable to say the word is different from retrieving the word and misunderstanding its use. Tell Mocchi which part feels difficult so the follow-up addresses the right connection.
Keep the session manageable. A short set you can review honestly is more useful than a large queue completed by quickly revealing answers. You need enough attention to notice why a card was hard and whether the prompt itself is doing its job.
Separate recognition from an independent attempt
When a card shows a familiar word such as 約束, try the intended meaning or reading before opening the answer. Then place it in a simple context, such as an arrangement with a friend. If the word only becomes available after the picture or explanation, record that support rather than treating the recognition as the same performance as unaided recall.

| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 友達と約束があります。 | Tomodachi to yakusoku ga arimasu. | I have an arrangement with a friend. |
| 約束を忘れました。 | Yakusoku o wasuremashita. | I forgot the promise or arrangement. |
Use ratings as useful information, not a reward to maximize
Choose the difficulty that reflects the actual attempt. A rating is part of the review process, not a judgment of your worth or a score you need to make look impressive. If you used a hint or could not retrieve the intended answer, make that visible. Accurate information gives the next return a better chance of matching your needs.
Improve a repeatedly difficult card's context
Ask whether the prompt tests one clear meaning and whether the example is understandable. A broad gloss or misleading image can make a card hard for reasons that repetition alone will not solve. Mocchi can help explain the word and suggest a focused memory cue, while you decide whether the card needs a clearer study context.
Return the word to a new sentence
After a short explanation, read or produce a changed example without the original picture visible. This checks whether the word is available beyond the card's familiar appearance. Keep the result as a review observation rather than declaring permanent mastery. A useful routine combines the scheduled return with small meaning checks that connect vocabulary to the Japanese you actually want to understand and use.
