Name the kind of misunderstanding
Before choosing a phrase, decide what you need. If the sound passed too quickly, repetition may solve the problem. If you heard a word clearly but do not know its meaning, ask about that word. If you think you understood a detail, confirm it directly. Each request gives the other speaker a different job.
Tell Mocchi you want to practise choosing the repair, rather than receive a long list of expressions. Ask for a short situation and wait before showing the suggested phrase. Your choice should depend on what went wrong in that particular exchange.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| もう一度お願いします。 | Mō ichido onegai shimasu. | Could you say that once more? |
| もう少しゆっくりお願いします。 | Mō sukoshi yukkuri onegai shimasu. | A little more slowly, please. |
Recover the part you actually missed
Suppose someone gives directions and you lose the name of an exit. A broad request to repeat everything can work, but you can often be more precise. Ask whether they said the east or west exit. That keeps the useful information you already understood and focuses the next response on the missing detail.
In Mocchi, explain which part was clear and which part was not. Ask for another version of the directions with one changed detail. This makes the choice of repair meaningful instead of turning every exercise into the same request for slower speech.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 東口ですか、西口ですか。 | Higashiguchi desu ka, nishiguchi desu ka. | Is it the east exit or the west exit? |
| 「改札」はどういう意味ですか。 | Kaisatsu wa dō iu imi desu ka. | What does kaisatsu mean? |
Use confirmation when you have a likely interpretation
If you believe the meeting time is three, repeat the detail as a confirmation. The speaker can then confirm or correct that part. A specific check is easier to answer than a long explanation of everything you might have misunderstood. Keep your voice and wording appropriate to the relationship.
Ask Mocchi to distinguish a confirmation from a new request. Confirming that the time is three is different from asking whether three would be convenient. This difference matters because the other person may otherwise think you are proposing a change rather than checking what you heard.
Practise the repair inside the whole exchange
Prepare a short exchange: hear directions, ask for one clarification, receive the answer and say what you will do. The repair is successful when it helps you continue with the correct information. Repeating a polite phrase without understanding the reply leaves the original problem unresolved.
Use /kaiwa in Mocchi to choose a suitable AI Sensei topic or mission. Explain your learning target before the voice activity: you want to practise clarification and confirmation. Afterwards, review the moment of uncertainty and whether your next response showed that the message was now clear.

| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 三時ですね。 | Sanji desu ne. | At three, right? |
| 分かりました。ありがとうございます。 | Wakarimashita. Arigatō gozaimasu. | I understand. Thank you. |
Ask for a different explanation when repetition is not enough
Sometimes you hear the same sentence again and still do not understand it. At that point, another identical repetition may not help. Ask for the meaning of a word or a simpler explanation. In practice, tell Mocchi what you have already understood so the next explanation can build on that part.
Do not treat every difficulty as a pronunciation problem. A missing word, an unfamiliar structure and a mistaken assumption about the situation need different support. The repair activity should help you identify the obstacle and respond to it, rather than simply speak more slowly.
Keep a small set of repairs ready for reuse
Choose a few phrases you can retrieve comfortably: repetition, a word-meaning question and a detail confirmation. Say them aloud without looking, then ask Mocchi for new situations that require different choices. Keep the set small enough that you can use it when the conversation is already demanding.
When a real interaction becomes unclear, a short accurate repair can preserve the conversation. Afterwards, record the word or detail you missed and practise it separately. Mocchi can help prepare that focused follow-up, while AI Sensei provides another opportunity to use the recovery skill in an exchange.
