Start with a meal you want to describe
Tell Mocchi your fictional purpose, such as choosing vegetables for a simple soup. That purpose helps select a few useful words and a question you can actually ask.
Keep the first task small. A short note with two products is enough to practise reading and asking without needing a complete food vocabulary course first.
Connect the product word with its written form
Use /vocab for the complete food word and /kanji where a written reading is unclear. Return to the shop note and identify the word in context. Ask about the meaning you need for this example.
Save a useful word as a flashcard if you plan to revisit it. Recall it from meaning, then use it in a sentence about what you want to buy or make.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 野菜 | Yasai | Vegetables |
| 旬 | Shun | The peak season for a food |
Read the note without confusing recommendation and preference
Ask Mocchi for a brief fictional shop note that recommends one item. Identify the recommendation and any stated reason. Do not add a reason the text does not provide.
Use /quiz to check who prefers or recommends which item. Explain the clue. This prepares you to distinguish another person’s suggestion from your own cooking plan.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| おすすめはどれですか。 | Osusume wa dore desu ka. | Which do you recommend? |
Explain your purpose to AI Sensei
Prepare a suitable shopping conversation with /kaiwa. In AI Sensei, ask about the vegetables and explain what you want to cook. Listen to the recommendation before asking the next question.
If the reply is general, ask a focused question about the item or intended use. You are practising a responsive exchange rather than reciting a food list.

| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| スープに入れる野菜を探しています。 | Sūpu ni ireru yasai o sagashite imasu. | I am looking for vegetables to put in soup. |
Review what blocked the choice
If a product name was unfamiliar, practise recalling it and returning it to the question. If all the words were familiar but the recommendation was misunderstood, use a short listening-and-response exercise.
Give Mocchi the difficult turn and ask for a targeted follow-up. A changed product or meal makes the next attempt a useful check of understanding.
Try another purpose with the same inquiry skill
Choose a fictional salad or side dish next time. Read, ask, explain your purpose and respond to a suggestion. The new use changes which words and follow-ups are relevant.
Unihongo connects personal interests with several skills: Mocchi plans and explains, study tools support recall, and AI Sensei gives the vocabulary a role in a voiced conversation.
