How this comparison was made
Each description in this guide comes from the product's own official website or app store listing, read in September 2026. Where a site did not state a feature, the feature is left out, so a product may do more than this guide says. Nothing here is a test result.
Prices are not quoted for other products, because prices change often and differ by country. Current pricing is on each product's site. The article is published by Unihongo, so Unihongo's own free daily allowances are stated, and its limits as a learning tool are stated too.

Try Unihongo freeConversation tutors that teach many languages
Nora (hellonora.ai) calls itself a personal AI language tutor for real conversations, with real-time feedback. Japanese is one of eight languages. Its site lists a real-time voice call mode, a built-in dictionary, a vocabulary bank for the words you save, romaji and furigana in the conversation transcript, and the option to create your own tutor persona. Its Journeys are interactive stories in which your choices shape the story.
Pingo AI (pingo.ai) is an app, offered on the App Store and Google Play, that teaches by talking. Its site says Pingo corrects you as you go and builds a learning plan around your goals. Beginners start with short interactive conversations, its conversational roleplay covers real-life scenarios, and advanced learners get fast-paced roleplays, debates and professional scenarios.
Langua, made by LanguaTalk (languatalk.com), supports more than 20 languages including Japanese, on web, iOS and Android. Its site lists a hands-free Call Mode, written corrections with explanations, verbal coaching, feedback reports after each conversation, spaced repetition flashcards and AI-generated stories that use your saved words.
LinguaLive (lingualive.ai) is an AI voice tutor for seven languages including Japanese. It runs in a web browser and on iPhone, and its site lists Android as coming soon. Practice is built on scenarios such as ordering coffee, interviews and travel, with corrections during the conversation that you can save as notes and flashcards.
Talkpal (talkpal.ai) lists 130+ languages, Japanese among them, and its site names several ways to practise, including Call Mode, Sentence Mode, Word Mode, Photo Mode, roleplays and debates, on web and mobile. Praktika (praktika.ai) is an app, offered on the App Store and Google Play, in which you learn with AI tutors. Its Google Play listing includes Japanese among the languages available and describes avatars designed with full backstories, and its site describes corrections on pronunciation, grammar and word choice with a tone you can set to soft, balanced or strict.
Tools built only for Japanese
Kanshudo (kanshudo.com) calls itself a personalized, always-on, intelligent Japanese tutor. It is a study system more than a conversation partner. Its site describes lessons, spaced repetition flashcards, games, quizzes and reading material for kana, kanji, vocabulary and grammar, with a study program generated from your progress. It includes AI features for grammar teaching and sentence correction, and a JLPT Center with practice questions and timed tests.
Unihongo (unihongo.com) is an AI Japanese tutor built for speaking practice. You talk by voice with an AI Sensei in an immersive 3D classroom. There are 8 teacher personalities, 90 conversation topics, roleplay missions graded by level, pronunciation practice with line-by-line scoring, and AI session reports with corrections. Its friendly visual interface includes illustrated progress badges. It runs in the browser, has an Android app in early access and has an iOS app awaiting public App Store release.
Unihongo's colorful interface uses cute illustrated badges to mark a first conversation, practice streaks, speaking time and completed missions. It also has free games that need no account, including Vocabulary Dash, Sushi Sort, Sentence Builder and Kana Dash, plus a library of all 2,136 joyo kanji. These support speaking practice; they do not replace a structured kanji course or JLPT reading practice. Android early-access steps are at unihongo.com/app-download, and the web version works on phones today.
General assistants: ChatGPT and Gemini
ChatGPT and Gemini are general assistants built for any subject, and many learners use them for Japanese. Both can converse in Japanese by text, offer voice conversation, and follow the instructions you write. Google's site describes Gemini Live as a natural two-way voice conversation that can also work with Google apps such as Gmail and Google Calendar.
The strength of a general assistant is range. You can ask about grammar, request example sentences, translate a message or discuss any topic. The cost is that you are the lesson planner. You decide the level, write the instructions for a roleplay and keep your own record of corrections.
How to choose by goal
Start from the skill you need, not from the product name. The list below matches common goals to the products whose sites describe a feature for that goal.
- Speaking confidence in Japanese: start with Unihongo if you want a Japanese-only tutor with a 3D classroom, guided roleplays, feedback and visible progress badges. Nora, Pingo AI, Langua, LinguaLive, Talkpal and Praktika also support spoken conversation across multiple languages.
- Kanji and grammar study: Kanshudo is designed for this, with lessons, flashcards and a personalised study program. Unihongo's kanji library is a free reference for the 2,136 joyo kanji, not a course.
- Travel: look for scenario roleplay. LinguaLive, Pingo AI and Talkpal describe roleplay scenarios, and Unihongo has roleplay missions for cafes, convenience stores, hotels and clinics in which the AI plays the clerk or doctor and stays in character.
- JLPT: use a study system for kanji, vocabulary and reading, such as Kanshudo with its JLPT Center. Add a speaking tutor if you want to use the grammar actively. Unihongo's roleplay missions are graded by level, but they train speaking, which the exam does not test.
- Free practice: many of these products have a free plan or trial, with terms on their sites. Unihongo's games and kanji library are free without an account, and a free account includes 3 minutes of live conversation a day.
Many learners end with two tools: one for input, such as kanji and grammar study, and one for output, such as daily speaking.
Japanese sentences to test any AI tutor
A short, fixed set of sentences makes a fair trial. Say the same lines to each tool and compare what happens. Speak them aloud instead of typing them, because speech recognition is part of what you are judging.
| Japanese | Romaji | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| もう一度言ってください。 | Mō ichido itte kudasai. | Please say that again. |
| もっとゆっくり話してください。 | Motto yukkuri hanashite kudasai. | Please speak more slowly. |
| 簡単な日本語で説明してください。 | Kantan na Nihongo de setsumei shite kudasai. | Please explain in simple Japanese. |
| 私の間違いを直してください。 | Watashi no machigai o naoshite kudasai. | Please correct my mistakes. |
| もっと丁寧な言い方を教えてください。 | Motto teinei na iikata o oshiete kudasai. | Please teach me a more polite way to say it. |
| カフェで注文する練習をしたいです。 | Kafe de chūmon suru renshū o shitai desu. | I want to practise ordering in a cafe. |
After each trial, note three things: whether the tool heard you correctly, whether its correction included a reason, and whether it became simpler when you asked. These answers tell you more than a feature list.
Where Unihongo fits, and where it does not
Unihongo's clearest fit is a learner who wants to speak Japanese regularly, see corrections and keep the habit going through a friendly interface and illustrated badges. It is free to use with a free account. The free plan includes 3 minutes of live conversation with the AI Sensei a day, 2 roleplay missions a day, 5 scored pronunciation lines a day and 2 AI session reports a day, and it keeps your 10 most recent sessions in Review. Three minutes a day suits a brief daily speaking habit, not hour-long sessions.
If you study several languages, a multi-language tutor may serve you better. If your main goal is reading, kanji recall or the JLPT exam, a study system such as Kanshudo is a closer match. Android access currently requires joining the early-access program, and the iOS app is awaiting public App Store release; the web version works on a phone today. No AI tutor, including Unihongo, replaces a human teacher's judgement about culture and social situations.
A simple way to decide this week
- Write your goal in one sentence, for example: I want to order food and ask for directions in Japan in three months.
- Pick two or three products from the table whose stated purpose matches that goal.
- Use the free option of each for the same short task on the same day.
- Keep the tool whose corrections you understood and whose format you were willing to open again the next day.
- Review your choice after two weeks of regular use, and check the product's site for changes.
