Learn Japanese for your Japan trip

You do not need to know every word before your trip. Start with the conversations you are likely to have: ordering a drink, asking where to go, and checking in. Mocchi can help you prepare, then point you toward speaking practice in Unihongo.

Choose a moment, not a giant word list

Tell Mocchi where you want to use Japanese and what feels difficult: β€˜I am a beginner visiting Japan. Help me prepare to order at a cafe.’ Ask for a small number of useful phrases, their meanings, and a short explanation of when to use them.

For example, γ‚³γƒΌγƒ’γƒΌγ‚’δΈ€γ€γŠι‘˜γ„γ—γΎγ™γ€‚ means β€˜One coffee, please.’ εΊ—ε†…γ§γŠι‘˜γ„γ—γΎγ™γ€‚ means β€˜For here, please.’ Learn the request and a likely follow-up together. Being able to order is more useful when you can also respond to a simple question.

Practise asking for help, too

A successful exchange does not require understanding every reply immediately. γ‚‚γ†δΈ€εΊ¦γŠι‘˜γ„γ—γΎγ™γ€‚ means β€˜Once more, please.’ γ‚†γ£γγ‚ŠγŠι‘˜γ„γ—γΎγ™γ€‚ asks the other person to go slowly. Practise these alongside the main phrases so you have a way to keep a conversation going.

Ask Mocchi to explain one unfamiliar phrase from a sample exchange with /explain. For vocabulary, /vocab cafe gives you a focused starting point. When a vocabulary card appears, you can save useful words to flashcards for another practice session.

  • Choose one situation you expect on your trip.
  • Learn a request and one likely follow-up.
  • Keep a phrase for asking someone to repeat.
  • Try the exchange aloud before adding more vocabulary.

Move from reading to speaking

Type β€˜/kaiwa ordering at a cafe’ to get suggestions for a speaking topic or roleplay mission. Mocchi helps you choose and prepare; the linked AI Sensei or roleplay activity is where the spoken conversation happens.

Practise once with your notes, then again with fewer prompts. Change the order, the number of people, or the destination. Small variations test whether you can use a phrase rather than only repeat the example you memorized. Access to activities and mission levels depends on your plan.

Build a routine around the trip

If you have several weeks to prepare, ask /plan for a study plan and tell Mocchi that travel is your goal. Focus your practice on a few repeatable situations instead of trying to cover every possible encounter.
